We all know that every car battery a lifespan. And there is no way to know what that will be. There are so many variables that can affect it. Even taking care of it perfectly It will die one day. You might of heard it called the battery’s “Calendar life”. It’s Life is completely independent. On how many times it’s been charged or discharged.
Once the “Calendar Life” of a battery has been reached. The battery is now unusable. The 8 Simple Tips To Prolong The Life Of Your Car’s Lead Acid Battery
Tip 1: Do a monthly inspection of the battery terminals to make sure they are clean and corrosion free
The build up of corrosion around the terminals. Is possibly one of the first problems people will have with their battery. The corrosion destroys your connection from the battery and the vehicle. Many people just replace their batteries when they see a lot of this corrosion. But they do not need to.
This corrosion can easily be taken care of with 2 little remedies. Either pour a small amount of cola on the corroded area. The Acid in the cola will eat away at the corrosion. Or a DIY anti-corrosion paste of simply adding 3 parts baking soda and one part water. The alkaline properties of the paste will also eat away at this corrosion.
Once you get rid of the corrosion. Take a clean damp rag or sponge. And use it to clean the remaining residue and moisture from the terminals. After the terminals are dry rub some petroleum jelly on them to help reduce the risk of further corrosion.

Tip 2: One most of us are guilty of but you do not want to operate any car accessories (radio, lights, or electronics) before turning on the car ignition and driving the car
As long as the car is running the alternator is generating electricity. Which is charging the battery after it has a voltage drop. But using the accessories while the car is off. Is just depleting the battery as you are relying only on the batteries power to operate them.
This is not a very good practice as it is destructive to your car’s battery. They were not made for this type of use. They were designed to provide a sudden burst of power to start the car. A deep cycle lead acid battery was made for prolonged power for electronics. Not your car’s lead-acid battery.
By using the car’s battery as a battery that was made to power electronics. Instead of what it was meant to do. Provide a sudden burst of power for ignition. Ultimately will damage the battery. And greatly shorten its life span. So at all cost avoid these practice.
Tip 3: Make sure you have good battery cables and that the battery is secure.

In most case the companies website that sells these. Will have a form on the website. Where you can put in the make and year of your car. And it will tell you if your battery will fir their kit. Most of these kits are made from plastic or from an acid, thermal resistant material. Not only do they protect from extreme temperature changes. But allows for proper ventilation as well.
Tip 5: You Should always fully charge your car battery at least once a week
The best way is to use a battery charger to do this. it may not be feasible with our hectic lives these days. But if you have one you can always swap out your battery with the one you have already charged. Then you can charge the removed on when convenient for you during the week.
You will want to do this because even when the car is off. Your battery will continually drain. Because current is from the battery by your car accessories. Such as the radio, lights, GPS, and etc. That is why if you ever noticed your battery is dead after an extended trip. Where your car just sat there.

Important Safety Precautions To Be Aware Of:
Number One: Before you start to disconnect your battery refer to the owners manual. The most common way to disconnect your battery. Unless otherwise stated in the owners manual.
